Our History

In the early 1960s many of the farms in the Bundaberg Region were owned and operated by a large proportion of Italian Immigrants, who worked hard and long hours growing cane, small crops and running cattle. To find a release from their long weeks, many used to gather at friends places to play a friendly game of Bocce and Soccer.  They looked into becoming a club and found that they needed at least 16 founding members and $20,000. Many founding members paid $100 each (a large sum of money in those days!) to ensure their dream of creating a club became a reality.

Through countless numbers of chook raffles and volunteer involvement, as well as donations from the community, enough money was raised to purchase land at Miller Street and to build a small but adequate Club House. Opened on October 19 1968, they named their new club Across the Waves, for this was how most of them had travelled to start their new life in Australia aboard the Angelino Lauro.  The new Club had a small kitchen, bar and seating for around 50 people in the main bar and a large auditorium style room complete with indoor fountain!

The Club grew in popularity, most of the town used the auditorium for disco’s, dances and bingo - which guaranteed a full house every Friday and Saturday night!  A large growth in members for the Club enabled the purchase of land on the corner of Thabeban and Ritchie Streets during the late 1980s to house lawn bowls and a home ground for their soccer team.  With the introduction of gaming machines into Queensland, the Club was in need of more modern premises and in 1994 undertook a $3 million debt to open a newer modern club.  So we turn a new page in the history books of The Waves, with a current redevelopment under way.  We look forward to taking this journey with you.
